Art Is What And Where You Make It: Q&A With Conceptual Photographer Brandon Ton Lu

It doesn’t matter where you live, what cameras you use to shoot, or what software you use to edit — if you’re a creative person, you’re going to create art. Brandon Ton Lu is a Texas-based fashion and conceptual photographer based out of Texas. Being in an urban setting has allowed him to think outside of the box to create his photos. He has been developing his photography skills since 2017 and is just getting better and better. Having a creative mind is both a blessing and a curse, but if you think outside of the box, step outside of your comfort zone, go forth with a drive and a passion for creativity, and use what you’ve been given, you can create something amazing.

You have a certain vision for your photos and you execute them so well. How do you come up with these ideas?! Does it just come naturally or are you inspired by something you’ve seen somewhere or something you’ve experienced?

I think location has had a huge impact on my photography career. Texas is a state that is very different from other scenic areas such as California, or Colorado. Having nothing but urban areas forces me to think outside the box and to try new ideas. I am grateful to have picked up photography in Texas!

Let’s get the inside scoop from you. What cameras and lenses you use to shoot? What software do you use to edit?

Canon 6d paired with a 24mm 1.4 lens, I use Lightroom to color and Photoshop to make composites.

What kind of camera would you recommend for someone who is just starting out in photography?

A camera that allows you to capture an image is the camera I would recommend, it’s more about the photographer and less about the gear.

What do you hope to accomplish before the end of the year?

My end goal is to reach a bigger audience with my work, I hope to hit 50k before this year ends. 🙂

Your creative mind allows you to think outside of the box. That’s inspiring and motivating for every creative person out there. Do you have any advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?

For those with less experience with photography, your goal is to not aim for perfection or trying to shoot something crazy or unique. I think being consistent is the most important step in growing as a photographer, finding consistency will help you find your style. Once you find your style, work on small things revolving around your style such as lighting, posing, framing, compositing, and editing. I have witnessed this problem of consistency personal as I have friends who think they can pick up a camera and take banger shots instantly with no practice.
