How To Make It In The Industry As A Wedding Photographer
I hate to be that person, but appearances are everything.
Even if you’re a great photographer, you still have to remember something pretty important: how you look. Seriously. You have to stand out from the crowd, but also be lowkey at the same time. People need to know that you’re the photographer and not a waiter or a guest with a fancy camera. You know what I mean? People need to take you seriously so you can get hired again and again.
If you’re just getting into wedding photography, maybe you’re not exactly sure what to expect or what to wear. Or maybe you’ve done this before and you know what you have to wear. Maybe this isn’t your first rodeo. (Or…wedding. This is me trying to make a lame joke.)
So, what do you wear?
Dress professional, but comfortable.
Don’t wear something that is too casual or too dressed up. You don’t want to look like the person who doesn’t care, nor do you want to look like a guest or a waiter.
Jeans, sweatpants, sweatshirts, and sneakers are a no-no. That should be obvious, though.
Your wedding photographer wardrobe should be as such:
A modest romper or jumpsuit

Flats or comfy sandals

A nice top and dress pants

Care about your appearance.
If you dress as if you don’t care what you look like, then the people at the wedding will think that you don’t care about the photos you’re capturing. Some people at the wedding might know someone who is in need of a wedding photographer, and if you dress as if you don’t care what you look like, you won’t get asked to shoot another wedding! That’s just it, really.
It’s super unprofessional to dress so blah-like, especially if you’re surrounded by people wearing nice dresses and fancy tuxes. You’re going to be around children, old people, and a ton of strangers. If you dress wildly or as if you don’t care, you’re going to stick out like a sore thumb. (And yeah, grandma is a guest at the wedding and if she’s lost her filter, then she’ll say something to you and probably make you feel bad.)
Wear neutral colors.
Don’t wear mismatched colors or loud prints. It’s just…bad. Even if that’s your personality, it’s not anyone else’s and the last thing you want, again, is to stick out like a sore thumb. You’re there to blend in with the crowd and capture the special moments. Maybe go with a nice all black outfit! It’s slimming, it’s professional-looking, and it’s classic.
What do you wear as a wedding photographer? Simple, modest, comfortable, professional clothing. The end. That’s all she wrote.
And don’t forget — if you look good, then you feel good. People will notice if you feel confident and that’s good! Dress to impress, baby!
