The Switch From Aspiring Artist to Real Artist
Surprise! The moment that you decide you want to be a writer, photographer, model, musician, or whatever it may be, is the moment you become one. There is no magical half human, half unicorn, that’s kind of sexy, blowing its magical unicorn dust on you. “Aspiring” anything is a cop out, or you just tip toeing around your dreams.
There are no lines between being an artist or an aspiring artist. You are an artist. The only difference is, if you are good or not.
So the real question you should be asking yourself is, What makes a GOOD artist?
- Showing up.
Waiting for inspiration is like waiting for your cat to get up and pour you a cup of coffee. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. You have to go and get it. The biggest downfall of any artist is not showing up because they think a lighting bolt of creativity has to strike them in order to work. Well I am here to tell you that the only way that lighting bolt shows up is if you do.
When you think of an artist you might think of someone getting up in the late afternoon and making art up until four in the morning. While this might be the case for a few special humans and artists in movies, the rest of us have to get our lives together and stay organized.
You have to schedule time for creativity everyday, as well as keeping up with your research, social media, emails, etc. Doing this you will create a workflow that will continually keep you in the creative loop. Remember the unicorn doesn’t exist and isn’t going to help you.
- Art is not a destination.
As much editing, revising, or reformatting you are doing to your work, it will never be finished. You have to learn to accept that piece of work for what it is. Do not get caught up in the criticisms of your own work. Your art should be a journey.
- Taking your art seriously.
Now as an artist you have made the decision that it is not a hobby or a pastime anymore, it’s a business. Just like any business you will have to come to work everyday and work from the bottom up. You are in it for the long run and are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. No pansy half human, half unicorns around here. Just hard work.
